YouTube has announced that it has added support for HDR (High Dynamic Range) videos on its platform. This move will allow devices with support HDR to display the high quality content. HDR videos offer better contrast and wider range of colours. In a post on its official blog, the company notes that users will be able to watch YouTube videos in HDR on supported devices such as HDR TVs with their new Chromecast Ultra and will soon be available on all 2016 Samsung SUHD and UHD TVs. “As more HDR devices become available, YouTube will work with partners to enable streaming of the HDR version,” the company added.
Anyone will be able to upload HDR video on YouTube. The company is working with the DaVinci Resolve team to make uploading HDR “as simple as SDR videos.” Further, the company has outfitted the YouTube Spaces in Los Angeles and New York City with the equipment needed to produce HDR content.
Google tends to try and offer new video formats on its video streaming platform. Earlier this year, YouTube started supporting 360 degree live video streaming. While the company added support for viewing 360 degree videos last year, users could not live stream those videos.
