Samsung's new digital assistant may be called Bixby

Samsung is expected to unveil its own personal digital assistant soon, and it might be called Bixby. According to a report by Dutch website, galaxyclub.nl, the company has filed a trademark for the name in South Korea. Additional details of the filing reveal that the brand denotes a “computer application software for smart phones, mobile telephones, portable computers and tablet computers, namely, software used to operate voice recognition system.” It is possible that the new assistant may be a part of Samsung’s upcoming flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S8.

Last month, Samsung acquired digital assistant developer Viv. Viv was created by the same team that was behind Siri, and uses a Dynamic Program Generation (DPG) to write complicated programs on the go. The assistant uses DPG to scale a user’s question as compared to hard coded programs fed into existing assistants like Siri. It’s possible that Samsung’s digital assistant will be utilised on smart products other than phones. This could include TVs, refrigerators and more.

The introduction of Bixby might be one of many new features that Samsung plans to add to the Galaxy S8. Reports suggest that the phone may be powered by either a Qualcomm Snapdragon 830 SoC or the Exynos 8895 SoC. The device might also sport a 4K display and dual-rear cameras.
