Samsung Galaxy S8 may feature edge-to-edge oled display
Samsung is also working on displays with a screen-to-body ratio of more than 90 percent.
After the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, Samsung may go all-out on its next flagship device, the Galaxy S8. According to a report by The Investor, the upcoming device might sport an edge-to-edge OLED display, with a high screen-to-body ratio. Further, Park Won-sang, an engineer at Samsung’s display making unit told the publication, “Samsung Display would roll out a full-screen display whose display area ratio (a scale that measures space taken up by a display on the front part of a handset) reaches more than 90 percent next year.” Wong-sang also showed a concept image of a full screen Galaxy S7 Edge, which lacked the home button on the bottom. He added that all the sensors, such as the fingerprint sensor, would be built under the display.
Even if Samsung launches the Galaxy S8 with a high screen-to-body ratio, it won’t be the first. Recently, Xiaomi unveiled the Mi Mix smartphone with a 91.3% screen-to-body ratio. The phone has no top bezel, and the proximity sensor and earpiece are located below the display. The front camera is located below the display.
Previous rumours have suggested that the Galaxy S8 might come with a 5.5-inch 4K display, that’s designed for VR. It is also expected to sport either a Snapdragon 830 or a Exynos 8895 SoC with 6GB of RAM. The device is tipped to be unveiled at MWC 2017.
