Intel acquires VOKE VR to deliver immersive sports content

Intel has acquired another VR firm to deliver immersive sports content. The company has confirmed that it has acquired VOKE, a VR startup specialising in immersive sports video experiences.

Intel didn't disclose the financial terms of the deal, but VOKE will become part of Intel's new division called the Intel Sports Group. TechCrunch reports, VOKE's technology is being used to broadcast NBA games in the US and Kabaddi tournaments in India. VOKE markets a product named TrueVR, a stereoscopic camera for recording experiences as well as a software to deliver them to devices.

Intel is calling VOKE acquisition as digitization of sports. "At Intel, we’re building a broad portfolio of best-in-class solutions to deliver new, immersive sports experiences for athletes, fans and content producers," said James Carwana, General Manager of the Intel Sports Group in a press statement.

Intel is pushing hard to make merged reality a common field in consumer technology. With the acquisition of Voke, Intel hopes to lets fans be where the action is without ever leaving their living rooms.

VOKE's TrueVR platform is a multi-platform technology where users can access the experience from any device of choice. The platform is also broadcaster-friendly providing end-to-end solution for easy integration. Intel missed out on taking a pie out of mobile chipset business but it seems to be poised to deliver on next wave of technologies like virtual reality, augmented reality and drones.
